36V 40Ah Trolling Battery

The 36V 40Ah Trolling Battery is a 38.4-volt pack of 1,536 watt-hours with a 40-amp continuous rating, rated IP65, at 10.5 kilograms. It is the light 36-volt option for kayaks and small fishing boats.

Why 36 Volts

Current per pound of thrust

A 36-volt trolling motor draws about 0.55 amps for every pound of thrust, against 0.9 at 24 volts and 1.2 at 12. A 70-pound motor on 36 volts pulls near 38 amps flat out where the same thrust at 12 volts would take 84. Lower current brings smaller cable, cooler connections and a motor that holds its speed better under load.

On A Small Boat

1,536 watt-hours

At a cruising third of full power a 70-pound motor takes 12 to 14 amps, and 40 amp-hours give roughly three hours of that. Kayak and dinghy fishing rarely runs the motor continuously. Spot-lock holding and short repositioning runs stretch the same charge across a full day on the water.

Ten kilograms against fifty

Three 12-volt lead batteries in series make 36 volts and weigh close to 75 kilograms together. This pack weighs 10.5. On a kayak or a small tiller boat that saving is the difference between a workable install and an overloaded stern.

On A Small Hull

Mounting and trim

A kayak or a tiller boat carries the pack in a hatch or a strapped box. Keep it aft of centre and low to hold the trim the hull was designed around, and strap it down against a knockdown. The IP65 case survives spray and rain. Mount the terminals facing up and clear of a bilge that collects water.

Charging

Charge at 43.8 volts from a 36-volt lithium charger. A 12-volt or 24-volt charger cannot fill this pack, and a lead 36-volt charger overshoots the cell limit.
