Motorcycle LFP Starter 14Ah

$159.00

12.8V 14Ah LiFePO4 starter battery, 850 CCA, 2.2 kg, IP65. The top of the powersport range for UTVs, snowmobiles and sand machines.

SKU: ST12-14 Category:

The Motorcycle LFP Starter 14Ah is a 12.8-volt lithium starter battery rated 850 cold-cranking amps at 2.2 kilograms, in an IP65 case. It is the largest pack in the powersport range, for UTVs, snowmobiles and sand machines.

Cold Mornings

Starting a lithium pack in the freeze

LiFePO4 starter battery cells

Lithium cells stiffen as they get cold. Internal resistance climbs, and the first crank of a sub-zero morning comes up weaker than the same pack gives in summer. Riders work around it: switch the headlight on for 30 to 60 seconds first, and the small draw warms the cells from inside. If a first crank fails, the current the starter pulled has warmed the pack further, and a second attempt after a short pause turns the engine.

The Machines

850 amps and the accessories

850 cold-cranking amps turn a big UTV twin or a cold snowmobile engine. The 179.2 watt-hours matter as much as the cranking figure on these machines, where a winch, a plow lift, heated grips and a light bar all pull from the same battery while the engine idles.

Charging In Winter

The one limit

Discharge runs down to minus ten degrees. Charge is the guarded side: the BMS blocks charge below freezing to keep lithium from plating on the anode. A machine parked outdoors in winter takes its charge once the cells warm above zero, on a run or indoors.

Accessory Draw

The winch and the light bar

A winch pulls 100 amps and more under load, and it pulls while the engine idles. The alternator covers part of that draw and the battery covers the rest. 179.2 watt-hours behind an 850-amp pack give the winch, the plow lift and the light bar somewhere to draw from without dragging system voltage down to where the ECU starts logging faults.

Fit

Charging

The machine charges the pack while it runs. Indoors, a lithium charger at 14.6 volts fills it in about an hour once the cells are above freezing.
