Motorcycle LFP Starter 12Ah

The Motorcycle LFP Starter 12Ah is a 12.8-volt lithium starter battery rated 720 cold-cranking amps at 1.9 kilograms, in an IP65 case. It is built for large V-twins and flat-six touring machines.

Big Twins

Cranking against compression

A big air-cooled V-twin fights back on every compression stroke. The starter pulls hundreds of amps in pulses as each piston comes up, and the battery voltage dips with every pulse. A tired lead battery sags far enough on those dips to drop the ignition module below its working voltage, and the engine turns without firing. 720 cold-cranking amps hold the bus up through the pulses.

The Machines

1500 to 1800cc

The class covers the 1500 to 1800cc V-twins and the flat-six tourers that carry a YTX20 or a 20 amp-hour lead battery from the factory. Those lead units weigh 5.5 to 6 kilograms. This one weighs 1.9.

Accessories

Loads that ride along

Touring machines carry auxiliary lights, heated seats and grips, an audio system and a compressor. The 153.6 watt-hours give those accessories a buffer when the engine idles at a stop and the alternator is putting out little.

After The Start

How fast the pack takes charge back

Lithium cells accept charge faster than lead. Internal resistance is lower, and the pack takes the alternator’s output at full rate straight after a start rather than tapering early. A tourer making short hops between stops recovers its cranking charge in minutes instead of building a deficit across a day of stop-start riding.

Charging

Charging runs off the machine on the road and off a 14.6-volt lithium charger on the bench. Confirm the regulator holds under 15 volts at high revs on an older bike.
